Background of the Study:
Traditional approaches to pain management in Benin City, particularly in Oredo Local Government, remain a cornerstone of indigenous healthcare practices. Many residents rely on natural remedies, massage techniques, and spiritual rituals to manage pain from various ailments (Omoregie, 2023). These methods are deeply rooted in cultural heritage and passed down through generations. While some traditional approaches have shown promising analgesic properties, there is often a lack of scientific validation and standardized application protocols (Egharevba, 2024). Recent studies highlight both the potential benefits and risks of these practices, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach that respects traditional wisdom while incorporating modern pain management strategies (Osagie, 2025). This study investigates the efficacy and cultural relevance of traditional pain management methods in the region, aiming to provide evidence-based insights that can bridge the gap between indigenous and conventional treatments.

Statement of the Problem:
In Oredo, despite the popularity of traditional pain management approaches, there is insufficient clinical evidence to support their widespread use. The unregulated nature of these practices may result in inconsistent outcomes and potential health risks. This study seeks to address the gap in knowledge regarding the efficacy and safety of traditional pain management, thereby informing better integration with modern medical practices (Omoregie, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate traditional pain management methods in Oredo.
  2. To assess the efficacy and safety of these traditional approaches.
  3. To recommend guidelines for integrating traditional and modern pain management strategies.

Research Questions:

  1. What traditional methods are commonly used for pain management in Benin City?
  2. How effective and safe are these traditional approaches?
  3. What integration strategies can enhance pain management outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Traditional pain management methods significantly reduce perceived pain.
  2. Unregulated traditional practices may lead to inconsistent treatment outcomes.
  3. An integrated approach will improve overall pain management.

Significance of the Study:
This study will provide valuable insights into traditional pain management approaches, potentially guiding the development of integrated treatment protocols that combine cultural practices with modern medicine. Its findings may influence policy and practice in Oredo Local Government (Omoregie, 2023; Egharevba, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Pain Management: Strategies used to alleviate or manage pain.
  • Traditional Approaches: Indigenous methods based on cultural practices.
  • Integration: The process of combining traditional methods with modern medical practices.
